Υπόθεση:
Omnibus of five short films that were shot in the Turkish province of Kars, on the border with Armenia. Among the five directors are three debutants who were chosen to film their stories after winning a scenario contest. The final result is a sympathetic collection of films that remain small and simple: the puppy love between a boy and a girl on their winter trip to school, the memories of a young woman about her mother’s response to her first menstruation and bra, and the story of a student who returns to his village, but all too soon flees again from the past that is waiting for him there. The stories take place strikingly often around the cemetery and look at things from the past being revealed. The last contribution to the omnibus film is also significantly called »a small truth«.
Five short stories linked by their location, Kars on the border with Armenia, and their writers/directors who were all winners in the 2007 Ankara Cinema Association’s screenplay competition. Özcan Alper’s charming »Moto Guzzi« features a boy, a girl and a lot of snow; Zehra Derya Koç’s »Ashes« is a discreet meditation on a child asserting her independence; »Zilo« by Ülkü Oktay features a young charmer out of step with her parents; in Ahu Öztürk’s »Open Wound« Ozan comes home for a funeral and learns his family’s real history; Emre Akay’s witty »A Small Truth« playfully explores memory. It all adds up to an enjoyable and impressive display of new Turkish cinematic talent.
The first short film, »Moto Guzzi«, comes from Özcan Alper, the talented director behind »Sonbahar« (»Autumn«). This is a minimalist and naive tale that carries Alper’s eye for master shots, but differs in tone from his somber debut. Yusuf bikes to school every day and on the way sees Leyla, the girl he has a crush on. The girl has a crush on him too, but she waits for the service bus each morning. Their encounter is but a brief nod, sometimes not even that. In the open planes where there is nothing but long roads and snow, the shyness of these two children becomes ever more evident and sweet. The day comes when Leyla’s bus doesn’t show up, and who else but Yusuf could give her a ride on the back of his bike? Alper’s film provides the film with a pleasant and feel-good opening.
